Transforming school's outdoor play areas

a three part project by PwC volunteers

Project details

On three occasions, three separate teams of volunteers from PwC transformed the outdoor play area at a North Westminster school.
Using pictures specially drawn by the school children as blueprints the PwC volunteers brought colour and life to what used to be a dull and discoloured wall. From scratch, they created a vegetable garden made up of individual mud-boxes designed to aid teachers in introducing children to plants and sources of food as part of the school curriculum. The volunteers also laid a quaint stone pathway around the school's pond, making the pond and its wildlife accessible again, and they built a "Bug Hotel" for children to recreate for themselves insect friendly habitats.

About the school

Why they volunteered

The school sits in North Westminster, one of the more deprived areas of Westminster and the country; with around 45% of children receiving free school meals (an indicator of poverty). A diverse ethnic background of children means that around 60% of children have English as a second language.
"Team bonding & team building are essential for projects at work. In volunteering for this project we used skills in various ways...team building, communication, motivating each other and having fun, as well as strategic planning of our time"
PwC volunteer

"The work completed by PwC went beyond our expectations as it was completed to such a high standard. We will now be able to move forward with our plans to incorporate our wildlife area and allotment into the school curriculum"
