Handbook to Creating Full Time Internships

Having a full-time volunteer could be very beneficial for you and your organisation. Are there lots of projects you would love to do but don’t have the time to start? A full time volunteer brings commitment, energy and a fresh young perspective.

Volunteering is a mutually beneficial activity and whilst the young people will provide you with all the above there are a few things that you should provide in return. A full-time volunteer will be with you for approximately 30 hours per week for a minimum of 13 weeks.

We recommend that your organisation provides an induction, training, supervision and support (like you have for paid members of staff), reimbursement of travel or other expenses incurred as a result of the volunteering activity, and a full reference for the individual to take away at the end of the time period. Putting it like that; it's not really unreasonable for 390 hours of extra help, support and inspiration

There has been much speculation over the differences between volunteering, internships, work placements and apprenticeships. The answer is in the implications of the terms and how you choose to market your opportunity to young people. There are no clear criteria stipulating the differences between the terms however, the perceptions from young people suggest that by promoting an opportunity as an Internship rather than full time volunteering, they will gain more transferable skills that they didn’t know they could gain from volunteering.

There is no better term to use as both internships and volunteering should hold the same structure and result. An opportunity marketed as an Internship implies that there is a certain level of organisation involved in the placement and that the experience gained will be of a high standard where the skills gained will improve their skills in a working environment and contribute to their future career aspirations.
