Older People Befriending Scheme
For the past 9 months, Volunteering for a Healthier Westminster has been piloting a volunteer befriending scheme for older patients of the Victoria Medical Centre and Dementia Service. Many of those who were recently isolated and in some cases housebound, are now enjoying regular trips out to places of interests, improved access to health services and regular weekly shopping trips. This is mainly down to the team of very committed and enthusiastic Westminster residents who have been recruited and trained, and now give up their free time to visit their friends at home or help them to engage in their local community.
With thanks to donations received from the John Lewis Partnership and Paddington Rotary Club, the project held a special Christmas afternoon event in mid December which for most was the first social event they have attended in quite a few years. It was also the first time some of the befriendees got to meet each other. The afternoon provided an afternoon of music, conversation and laughter with around 40 people who attended. With current funding coming to an end on March 2012 discussions are being held with a number if health and social care professionals to help us secure funds for this valuable piece of work to continue, expand and potentially benefit many other older isolated members of our local community.
