Construction Site visit by Land Securities
@ BBC HQ for students from local Academy
Introduction
A team of volunteers from Land Securities took students interested in a career in construction and engineering for a tour of the new BBC headquarters construction site. The aim of the tour was to provide the students with a tangible introduction to construction.
Project Description
The volunteers began the tour with a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the history of the construction project; the challenges faced, and their solutions; and animated 3D delivery time-lines. Personnel from Land Securities and Bovis then gave talks about their personal foundation education and career development.
Donning protective gear, the students were taken on tour, which included an explanation of the bespoke requirements for various parts of the building, for example the sound-proofed rooms. After the tour, the students met the building's architects from Sheppard Robson and then undertook a team challenge to build the tallest tower made only from plastic clothes pegs. The exercise was designed to emphasise the importance of team-work, leadership and planning when undertaking any construction project.
To commemorate their visit, the students were presented with memento certificates, and the Academy was presented with the book '100 years of the BBC'.
The visit was filmed by a 6th Form student aiming to advance his media career. |

Quotes

School: "It is difficult to appreciate the size of the project, the work that went into organising it, considerations of the ‘neighbours’ and the working environment of the BBC while work is in progress and the range of agencies working together. This was a really valuable opportunity for students at the Academy to learn about and gain experience in teamwork, which is a particular area of need I am trying to address in creative ways for our sixth form students. I have to compliment you and your colleagues for pitching the event at the right level and for giving up time to plan and run it: It is not easy."
Employee volunteers: "Notwithstanding that the initial reaction was perceived as a distraction from the project priorities, it soon became apparent that we must give back more to those who need to know how to follow our career path. We all felt the better for having given some of our time to such a worthy cause."
