vMail - October 2010

Hopefully this month’s vMail will bring a little bit of sunshine to this cold October week. September has whizzed by, and we are already in mid-autumn, so let’s concentrate on some positive news; vInvolved Central London have some exciting and diverse volunteering opportunities within Central London for 16 to 25 year olds. Please read on for more details…
NEWS and YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES
Takeover Day Want to find out what the workplace looks like? Takeover Day offers children and young people across the country the chance to work with adults and get involved in decision-making in all kinds of organisations. Anyone and everyone can be part of it! In 2009 around 30,000 children and young people worked with hundreds of organisations, including businesses, schools, police and fire services, newspapers, banks, TV and radio stations, charities, local councils, MPs, hospitals and government departments. This year we want you to help us raise it to 40,000! For more information: http://www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/issue_rooms/takeover_day
Picture Poetry Picture Poetry is part of Stories of the World, one of the major projects at the heart of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It is a 7 week creative project running from Wednesday 3rd November – Wednesday 15th December 2010 at the Geffrye Museum. Sessions will take place once a week between 5-8pm at the Museum. The project is open to all young people aged 14-24 and all refreshments will be provided. Over the course of the project, the participants will work with a professional poet, photographer and digital technicians to create, and then take home, their own digital stories inspired by objects from the Museum’s collection. Participants will gain unique access to the Museum’s collection and skills development will include Poetry writing, Performance and Photography. For more information please contact Hannah on hlake@geffrye-museum.org.uk or 02077399893.
EVOLVE
Who are eVolve? Our Youth Action Team, called eVolve, are a group of young people who help us promote volunteering to their peers. eVolve support vInvolved Central London by giving us feedback about our projects, allowing us to deliver a more youth-led programme.
What have eVolve done this month? This month, eVolve were provided Presentation Training by the Global Skills College (http://www.lpi-global-skills.org.uk/students.php) who aim to help our students develop the skills they will need in today’s global economy. Like eVolve, you can also benefit from this free training! They do this through a series of skills workshops which take place on weekday evenings and at weekends. These skills workshops are aimed particularly at people aged 15 to 25. The workshops are run by a dedicated team of volunteers, who come from a wide range of professional backgrounds. eVolve found this really useful and so have been asked to present at a couple of vInvolved Central London’s upcoming events. I hope you can wish them lots of luck (not that they’ll need it).
OPPORTUNITIES
Walkabout Assistant: Prospex Youth Club Prospex’ Street Teams actively go out and engage with young people who are hanging about on the streets, estates and parks. They require volunteers to help them on their Walkabouts, so that they can build up a relationship of trust with these young people. This then enables them to gain the information they need, access positive activities, employment opportunities or help back into education either through another Prospex service or by referring to another provider. The Street Team members are easily identified by wearing clothing clearly displaying the Prospex logo. Currently, the Prospex Street Teams can be found on Tuesday and Friday evenings at varying times from 6pm onwards. Each session is for a minimum of 2.5 hours and the teams work in pairs. Prospex are very willing to develop their volunteers, and so will allow you to work towards an ASDAN qualification! This is a fantastic opportunity that will not only give you hands on experience with young people, but also get awarded for it in the process. To apply: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6MC2YHL
