Support Employability Fair

employability A housing association in North Westminster has designed a summer programme of employability activities designed to engage Young People who are not in education, employment or training aged 14 – 24.

They are seeking volunteers from the world of work who can help support the activities. The activities are all designed to encourage young people to think about their own career paths, learn more about employment options and get practical support to help them become employed in the near future.

Why should you get involved?
This is a pilot project aimed at increasing levels of aspiration in a deprived area while also identifying as-yet untapped talent. It is an opportunity to interact with local people, to demonstrate your own opportunities and ethos and to ‘give something back’ to the local community. We work with a wide range of disadvantaged but often committed and hardworking young people who can provide a fresh perspective to an existing workforce, but often become disenchanted with the world of employment and their own prospects before identifying their own talents. This is an opportunity to tap into this talent at the source, providing participants with some practical and tangible support at the same time.

Venue: North Westminster W9 (Nearest tube: Warwick Avenue/Royal Oak)

We are seeking teams of employee volunteers to run workshops (two options below):

  1. World of Work Workshop For employers with an interest in recruiting but no current opportunities, we can offer a 30 min slot to promote the organisation and discuss your own career path/routes into this career. We would also be interested in HR and recruitment employees interested in giving a ‘behind the scenes’ view of the recruitment process.
  2. Professional Skills & Effective Communication Workshop
Many young people have never even entered an office/ professional workplace and need support which involves developing their softer skills, confidence and learning appropriate behaviours within the workplace. This help is crucial as without these skills they will struggle to begin their journey towards work.

The workshop would involve discussing topics such as:

  • What do we define as “Professional skills”
  • How can I make a strong first impression
  • Body language and non verbal cues
  • Words and formal/informal language
  • Asking questions and handling difference (perhaps include role playing)
  • Workplace culture

Some of these topics can be discussed or even acted out in role plays including the young people and emulating situation. We are keen to involve a diverse range of volunteers to show different perspectives, extensive experience in HR or training is not required. We need people who are keen to engage with young people.

Requirements: Ratio of 1 volunteer to 3 beneficiaries – up to 8 volunteers
Actual workshop: Minimum 1 hour, Maximum ½ a day
Preparation time: 4 to 5 hours
Location: North Westminster

N.B Follow on projects we are seeking volunteers for include mentoring, dragons den judges and further workshops and work experience.
