'Hip, hip hooray' say all for success of the Westminster Community Project!

There were celebrations all round at the Abbey Centre in Smith Street at the end of this ambitious six-month pilot scheme to place people in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse in volunteering placements. One of the participants has already found full time paid employment and many more have embarked on useful volunteer placements.

Thanks to the combined efforts of One Westminster, which offered volunteering expertise, and Turning Point’s great experience in supporting substance abusers, as well as other voluntary sector partners,  the success of this scheme lends weight to the idea of a more permanent project to support the rehabilitation of ex-substance abusers into the community.

Turning Point LogoAs Turning Point’s team leader Renee Dekanah put it: “The skills and confidence that participants have gained are vital stepping stones towards their longer term goals. The mentors have gained too from supporting someone who may have come from a very different background and speak about personal growth.”

Gareth Owen, chief executive of One Westminster, added: “The scheme has exceeded all expectations. The pilot has demonstrated that positive partnerships between community groups can deliver astonishingly impactful results.”
