Networking at speed - mentors meet mentees

More than 25 mentors and mentees from One Westminster’s Youth VolEmploy Mentoring Scheme gathered recently at Grand Union Bar at Chancery Lane in London to learn about each other’s mentoring experiences and their career journeys.

As most people had never met each other, the format was speed networking, which means they were given a few minutes to chat to the person next to them, before moving onto the next. The aim was for the like-minded professionals and young jobseekers to meet as many people as possible in an hour. They could then discuss further over snacks and drinks.

The feedback from the group that attended was very positive, with many requesting another meeting in a few months to discuss their progress and network with more like-minded people in London.

“It was brilliant to talk to professionals from a variety of industries and background and learnt about their career journeys. Although my mentor could not come, this opportunity made me feel more confident about networking, and more importantly, I gained advice that was useful to my job search,” said Gurjit Kaur, a mentee.

“It was a lovely meeting other people from the mentoring scheme and enhancing my professional network. I look forward to the next one in a few months’ time,” said Rajan Kalakoti, a mentor from Euromonitor International.

One Westminster thanks the Big Lottery Fund for supporting the Youth VolEmploy Mentoring Scheme and plans to organise another event in due course. If you’d like more information about becoming a mentor or mentee, contact Nathalie Lam by email.
